Session FAQ
What should I/we wear to our portrait session?
I recommend neat casual clothes that represent each individual’s personality, normal colour choices and the type of clothes that everyone is comfortable wearing as these will make your portraits more natural and personal. The Information Pack that you will receive after booking your session will have some suggestions and ideas for you to consider.
What are the best locations for portrait photography sessions?
My preference for portrait photography sessions is to use outdoor locations and natural light whenever possible. Although natural light sometimes requires some assistance with reflectors and speedlites which I use when needed, I am not a fan of fixed studio lighting (especially for children) and choose not use it in my portrait photography.
Suitable outdoor locations may include your farm, back garden, a local park, favourite picnic spot, playground, beach, lake or river - anywhere you feel is appropriate for the photos you desire to have taken. There are many locations in and around the town of Boyup Brook that are suitable for portrait sessions and I also travel to other parts of the south west and up to Perth for sessions. Newborn and young baby sessions usually need to be done indoors for obvious reasons. Rooms where good natural light is available through nice large windows are ideal for these sessions.
What time is best for Portrait Photography sessions?
The "golden hour" before sunset is the absolute best time for beautiful and dramatic natural light portraits in almost any location. Early to mid morning and mid to late afternoon are the next best times for locations that do not have areas of open shade. However it really is more important with young children to have the portrait session at their 'good' time of day when they are usually the happiest and most co-operative or ready for a sleep. Even though midday might not the best time for photographs, we can certainly work with that time if the chosen location has large areas of open shade (verandahs, sides of buildings, large trees etc).
What will we do during the Session?
This will vary a little depending on the type of session, location, age and personality of individual subjects - so every portrait session will be unique. Having fun and enjoying spending time together with your child/ren and family is definitely part of the deal, so please bring along your sense of humour! My intention is to make all photo sessions relaxed, casual and fun, so don’t expect forced smiles, formal poses or anything overly traditional! Speaking for myself, I will be wearing jeans because laying in the dirt, climbing on logs or halfway up a tree is part of my job description when it comes to photographing kids in the great outdoors:)
